About Pilates

Pilates is a system of exercises that can transform the way your body looks, feels, and performs. Typically done on a floor mat or with the use of a specialized piece of equipment, Pilates focuses on improving both body flexibility and stability through a focus on breathwork, proper spinal and pelvic alignment, and smooth, controlled movements.

Pilates conditions the whole body. Because specific muscle groups are neither left out nor overworked, the entire musculature is able to gain even balance and conditioning, leading to improved body mechanics and enhanced freedom of movement. In Pilates, quality of movement takes precedence over quantity of repetitions. Those who regularly perform Pilates tend to have better muscle elasticity, improved joint mobility, less back pain, and are overall less prone to injury.

Critical to the practice, proper breathwork is essential in executing movements with maximum power and efficiency. It can also create synchronization between the body and the mind, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

Why it matters

Pilates lengthens and tones the body to find proper alignment, improve body stability, and increase range of motion and flexibility. Regular practice of this exercise system allows us to become stronger, use our bodies more efficiently, and generally feel good while engaging in everyday activities.

In a Nutshell

Pilates is a lifelong journey. A system of movement that can be practiced indefinitely, Pilates has the potential to transform lives. Be it your first class or your thousandth, the practice of Pilates continues to both challenge and renew the practitioner time and time again.
